Flat roofs



Built up of layers of roofing felt and tar.

  • Use a sharp knife to slice the blister open down the middle. Cut should sink into the full depth of blistered layer
  • Lift cut edges of blister. If there's water inside, press from edges in toward the center to squeeze out water from roofing layers. Soak up all the water then prop edges up to dry the layers.
  • Spread thick coating of roof cement on bottom edges of loose felt and tightly press down sides of blister.
  • Close the blister permanently with of galvanized roofing nails along each side of the slit, then spread roof cement over the entire blister. Ensure nail heads are well covered.

Shingle Roofs


To remove the damaged shingle, lift edges of surrounding shingles, remove nails. Slide-out the old shingle. When shingles are blown off by a storm, remove any protruding nails left in the roof. Nails that don't stick up can be left in place.

To make it easier to slide a new shingle, round its back corners with a sharp utility knife.

Slide new shingle into the gap, with its front edge aligned with shingles on each side and its back edge under shingles in the row above it.

Lift corners of overlapping shingles and tighten the top of the new shingle with 6d galvanized roofing nails. 

Open Roof Valley


To repair an open valley: Inspect valley for holes all along the joint. Mend the small holes with a similar type of sheet metal valley. Clean surface of the valley with a wire brush Cut about 2 inches bigger sheet metal.

  • Spread heavy set coating of roof cement on the harmed area and press patch into place, bending it to the shape of the valley. Spread more roof cement over edges of the patch to cover outer water.
